New Monuments

New Monuments, as an ongoing research, is taking shape through a dynamic dialogue that originated from a common acknowledgment: There is a significant gap in representation in the public sphere. It is inconceivable to experience this lack of representation in the public space where you act and contribute daily. Whether we are the benefactor or the subject of othering, the modern narrative of history does not include a vital part of the stories that need to be remembered, reissued and acknowledged. Since our knowledge is always situated, in our case we can observe the tension between old and new forms of inscription of collective memory, between figurative sculptures - the form per excellence for the inscription of memory in the western world - and performative works, where the bodies are constantly escaping monumentalization. Can the same tools be utilized to “build” new narrations or should we totally reject the given methods in order to move forward? Τo whom do these tools belong to, anyway? Can we imagine a symbiosis between old and new monuments?

H έκθεση Νέα Μνημεία διαμορφώθηκε μέσα από ένα δυναμικό διάλογο που ξεκίνησε με αφετηρία την κοινή πεποίθηση ότι αντιμετωπίζουμε ένα μεγάλο κενό εκπροσώπησης στο δημόσιο χώρο. Είναι αδιανόητο να νιώθει κανείς ότι δεν εκπροσωπείται στο δημόσιο χώρο όπου δρά και στον οποίο συνεισφέρει καθημερινά. Eίτε βρισκόμαστε στη θέση του επωφελούμενου, είτε αποτελούμε το αντικείμενο της «ετερότητας» - όπως ορίζει η έννοια του othering - , η σύγχρονη αφήγηση της ιστορίας δεν περιλαμβάνει ένα ζωτικό μέρος των ιστοριών που οφείλουμε να θυμόμαστε, να αφηγούμαστε ξανά και ξανά και να αναγνωρίζουμε. Καθώς η γνώση είναι άρρηκτα συνυφασμένη με το χώρο δράσης, παρατηρούμε, στην περίπτωσή μας, την ένταση που δημιουργείται μεταξύ παλαιών και νέων μορφών εγγραφής της συλλογικής μνήμης, μεταξύ της παραστατικής γλυπτικής – που αποτελεί την κατ 'εξοχήν μορφή εγγραφής της μνήμης στον δυτικό κόσμο - και των επιτελεστικών έργων, όπου τα σώματα ολοένα και ξεφεύγουν από τη μνημειοποίηση τους. Μπορούν άραγε να χρησιμοποιηθούν τα ίδια εργαλεία για να δημιουργηθούν νέες αφηγήσεις ή πρέπει να απορρίψουμε εντελώς τις κυρίαρχες μεθόδους εγγραφής προκειμένου να προχωρήσουμε; Σε ποιον ανήκουν τελικά αυτά τα εργαλεία; Μπορούμε να φανταστούμε μια συμβίωση μεταξύ παλαιών και νέων μνημείων;
